India: Plane Takes Off Amid Dense Fog at Delhi Airport

Dense fog over the past several days has continued to disrupt air and rail travel across parts of India, with conditions peaking on Monday, December 29, when Delhi’s IGI Airport saw 128 flight cancellations, dozens of delays, and several diversions as visibility dropped to around 125 meters. Fog has affected airports across north and eastern India and delayed many trains, prompting weather authorities to issue orange alerts for Delhi-NCR and nearby states and warn of continued disruption into the New Year. The Air Quality Index (AQI) dropped from 365 on Tuesday at 8 a.m. to 258 by Wednesday at 9 a.m. The authorities revoked the Stage III restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the entire National Capital Region (NCR), which resulted in the relaxation of bans on specific types of vehicles in Delhi, and nearby surrounding areas of Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Budh Nagar. Earlier actions, initiated by the government on Nov. 2, involved halting various pollution-causing activities, such as construction and mining. The minister said that while primary schools will remain shut, the option of taking online classes has been given to the teachers of Grade 6-12. "As pollution levels remain high, primary schools in Delhi will stay closed till Nov. 10. For Grade 6-12, schools are being given the option of shifting to online classes," posted the minister on X (formerly known as Twitter).
